Transcript of Tia Mowry’s Interview with Jim Brickman

Jim Brickman – School is back in session and yes the tablet or laptop is important, but it’s also really important for your kids to grab pencil, paper, and a book!  That’s right, joining us this weekend is actress, host and mom Tia Mowry.  She’s got some great ideas on why unplugging is a good thing to practice this school year.  How’re you doing Tia?
Tia Mowry – Awesome, I’m happy to be here.
Jim Brickman – So it seems like with all the updated electronics, that real books are becoming a novelty.  So what are the benefits of reading a real black and white printed book?
Tia Mowry – Paper and Packaging Board, they did this survey with uh parents um and they you know were researching education trends.  And they found out that parents and children prefer to learn on paper.  And there are huge benefits because of that, some of the benefits include:

•  Better Retention Rates
•  Increased Language Development
•  Increased Mental Development
•  Improved Memory

Jim Brickman – And what do you think is the best way is for parents to encourage kids to read every day?
Tia Mowry – Become involved with your children and their learning experience and their reading.  Become their play date!  Kids love to play with other people and there’s nothing wrong with mommy & daddy being the play date and reading with your child.  They really love it.  And not only that, create some sort of routine.  I read to my son every night before he goes to bed and I’ve been doing that since he was 1 and he’s now 6.  And I can say that he’s reading now on his own and it’s extremely rewarding for me.  But not only me reading with him is you know kind of like an educational process, but it also helps with you know staying away from those tablets for a minute and just bonding.  Creating memories together.  You know I truly – and my son – we truly enjoy our time together at night when I read to him.

Tia is Challenging YOU to Take the Pledge to Read with your Kids –
All it Takes is 15 Pages per Night!

Jim Brickman – Jim Brickman joined by Cooking Channel star, actress & author Tia Mowry.  Tia tell us about the pledge that families can be a part of just by reading 15 pages a day?
Tia Mowry – Yes, so like you said I’m encouraging everyone to just get out there adn read at least 15 pages a day.  And like I said just 15 pages a day you’ll definitely see some benefits, like the benefits I mentioned earlier.  But how you can pledge is you can go to howlifeunfolds.com/15pages or you can use the hashtag #15pages.
Jim Brickman – And is this something your family will be doing together?
Tia Mowry – Oh my gosh, yes definitely, definitely!  Like I said I think it’s important to you know create some sort of routine.  Yes there’s reading and learning at school, but I think it’s important to also bring it at home and to encourage the kids to read at home. Make sure you have some sort of environment that’s comfortable and fun for them.  Whether that’s a playroom or an area that’s sectioned off in their room or the living room.  That’s what happened with my mom when I was growing up.  My mom had some sort of section in the living room where we would do our homework and read our books.  But yeah no it’s definitely something you can continue to do in the summer.
Jim Brickman – Where can our listeners go for more info on the pledge and the science behind unplugging this school year?
Tia Mowry – Yes, you can go to howlifeunfolds.com!

So this Weekend Make the #15Pages Pledge with your Family & Start Reading to Your Child
