Jim Brickman – Well sometimes this time of year you want to update your home, always kind of getting into the latest styles.  Even if you know it’s a full renovation or just refreshing your space.  So we always like to talk to Nate Berkus about his secrets about what makes a well designed space.  It’s good to have you with me Nate, thanks for joining us.

Nate Berkus – Hi Jim, how are you?

Jim Brickman – I’m good.  How are you?  I know you’re coming to us today from a pretty unique location.

Nate Berkus – Jim, I’m so excited.  So I’ve partnered with Delta Faucet – incredibly cool company that marries form and function – and they invited me to the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City.  We’re celebrating National Design Week here.

JB – So if we are looking for a little refresh of our house or our space, what are some easy design tips that you can give?
NB – The most important and the top line message is that our home should tell our story.  The way we do that is through our things.  The design decisions we make in our space matter, down to the kitchen or bathroom faucet.  Those things matter because it’s in the details that we really can allow our personalities to shine through.  And the best interiors are the ones that are assembled and feel layered over time and the ones where people really took the time to get to know themselves before they went out shopping.  And those are the rooms for me throughout history that are the most interesting – the ones that are deeply, deeply personal.

JB – And to add that personal touch or add a bit of personality, you say everyone can be a bit of a collector and bring something from your travels or experiences.  What do you think is the best way for people to do that or know the right piece to invest or use in our home?
NB – So when I say become a collector, I don’t mean ok go out right now and start collecting tea cups or dolls or antique clocks.  To become a collector is to take the time to assemble your interior by adding layer after layer after layer over time.  So when I look in my home and the rooms in my home, the things I have in the house – the furniture, accessories, the books – it’s all collection of things that I love.  And I’ve always believed whether you’re shopping online or you find yourself at a antique fair or estate sale, if you love it you’ll find a way to live with it.

Always good ideas from Nate Berkus and to give your spaces a refresh this fall!
